Here’s Some Really Good News!
Countries are finally acknowledging that more-than-humans are sentient, that they have feelings and emotions.
It's amazing that this process has taken so long, given everyday common sense observations of other animals and a vast body of science that tells us so. It just goes to show how grossly self-absorbed and narrow minded our society can be.
The move to legally recognize sentience in other species has important implications, not only for the wellbeing of individual animals, but also as an antidote to the extreme anthropocentricism that characterizes our civilization.
I'm convinced that we will never overcome our tendency to destroy nature and trash our own environment unless we learn to show great deference to other life. The world is one amazing ecosystem but it will ultimately fail us when we fail to do so.
England and Spain have officially recognized animals as sentient. Canada appears ready to do so as well. What about other countries? Let's get them on board! The United Nations as well.
By the way, octopuses are so cool! Talk about being "more than human!"
