That's essentially part of it. The other big part is our culture of extreme anthropocentrism that makes it virtually impossible to end the destruction of life. Other animals and plants and other forms of life have their own intrinsic worth, and we should respect that. In only narrow ways should they be considered "natural resources" for us.

And because we don't recognize a physicality or we don't understand a 'language'. does not make it and less a sentient being... it just reflects our blindness for what we didn't see
